Scout Basset Fund Conception
Paralympian Scout Bassett started a fund to help end the financial barriers that hinder women athletes with disabilities from realizing their full potential in elite athletic endeavors.
While being the Senior Project Manager on this project, I was tasked with creatively directing the digital assets, establishing a partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation, and managing the creation of the fund from setup to application. Most notably, I developed the fund’s tagline: “Championing Visibility Regardless of Ability.” The goal with the foundation slogan was to convey how differently abled folks still deserve to be seen and supported in society.
I produced the fund announcement video alongside the talented videographer Ron Kurokawa. We had the opportunity to film Scout at a competition in Los Angeles. We focused on the uniqueness of her story: that she was adopted, had her leg amputated as a result of a tragic fire accident, and her journey to the paralympics included her living out of her car. She understands how difficult it can be to not only compete but exist in those spaces and those she’s seeking to support will have similar stories. The fund will also be sharing the stories of those athletes selected so we wanted to make sure they were able to hear her story, see how comfortable she was sharing it, and be encouraged to voice their journey as well. Scout’s personality is very upbeat, high energy, and optimistic so we wanted the music track to reflect that. Each moment in the video, even showing Scout attaching the prosthetic was a conscious decision.
